Beginning Monday, July 20, the ramp from U.S. 74 to I-40 West is closed for approximately two weeks for essential bridge maintenance, requiring all westbound traffic to follow a signed detour. Motorists should expect delays and plan extra travel time.
The closure affects the ramp connecting U.S. 74 to I-40 West in the Clyde/Lake Junaluska area of Haywood County. While through traffic already traveling on I-40 West will continue uninterrupted, drivers coming from U.S. 74 will not be able to access I-40 West directly during the closure.
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the work may be completed sooner if weather conditions are favorable, but motorists should plan for the full two-week closure.
Bridge Maintenance Underway
The closure allows contractors to perform maintenance repairs to the bridge pier caps that support the ramp structure. Bridge pier caps connect the bridge's vertical support columns to the superstructure above, making them critical components of the bridge. NCDOT says a full ramp closure is necessary to complete the repairs safely while protecting both workers and motorists.
Official NCDOT Detour
Drivers needing to reach I-40 West from U.S. 74 should follow the official NCDOT-marked detour:
Follow signs from U.S. 74 to I-40 East instead of I-40 West.
Continue east on I-40 to Champion Drive (Exit 31) in Canton.
Follow the posted signs to re-enter I-40 West.
NCDOT emphasizes that this is the primary signed route for traffic that would normally use the closed ramp.
Alternate Local Routes
Drivers familiar with the area may choose local roads such as U.S. 276 or N.C. 209, depending on their destination, although these are not part of the official detour. Motorists unfamiliar with the area are encouraged to follow the signed NCDOT route.
Officials advise motorists to allow extra travel time, particularly during peak travel periods. Increased traffic is expected around the U.S. 74/I-40 interchange and the Champion Drive (Exit 31) interchange as vehicles follow the detour. Separate from Other I-40 Projects
Although several major transportation projects are underway along the I-40 corridor in Haywood County, including bridge replacement work near Newfound Road (Exit 33), this closure is a separate maintenance project affecting only the ramp from U.S. 74 to I-40 West.
