Asheville -- August 7, 2026: Motorists traveling through West Asheville should prepare for nighttime construction beginning Sunday, Aug. 9, as crews begin resurfacing approximately two miles of Haywood Road.
The work will extend from Patton Avenue to Ridgelawn Road and is part of a roughly $7 million North Carolina Department of Transportation project designed to improve the heavily traveled corridor for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.
Construction crews are scheduled to work from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, with resurfacing work expected to continue into November.
Nighttime Lane Closures Expected
Lane closures will be necessary during portions of the overnight work. On-street parking spaces may also be blocked off ahead of construction to keep vehicles clear of areas where crews will be working.
The resurfacing will include milling, which removes the existing upper layer of pavement before new asphalt is installed.
Drivers traveling through West Asheville during construction hours should allow additional time and watch for workers, equipment and temporary traffic changes.
More Than Just New Pavement
The Haywood Road project includes several improvements beyond resurfacing.
Plans call for bicycle lanes in both directions between Patton Avenue and Sulphur Springs Road, as well as between Richmond Avenue and Ridgelawn Road.
The middle portion of Haywood Road will retain its existing configuration, including the center turn lane.
Pedestrian improvements planned along the corridor include ADA-compliant curb ramps, high-visibility crosswalks, pedestrian bulb-outs and enhanced crossings, including flashing pedestrian warning signs at selected locations.
NCDOT awarded the approximately $7 million contract to Watson Construction of Franklin in 2025. Some pedestrian and curb-ramp improvements began before the resurfacing phase.
Drivers, Cyclists and Pedestrians Urged to Use Caution
Because Haywood Road runs through one of West Asheville's busiest commercial and residential areas, construction crews will be working in close proximity to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
NCDOT is asking everyone traveling through the construction area to remain alert, obey temporary traffic signs and slow down around work crews.
The resurfacing phase is currently expected to continue through November 2026, weather and construction conditions permitting.
