The primary pitted incumbent Sheriff Wilke against challenger Mease in a race that surfaced deep divisions over leadership and culture within the sheriff's office. Central to the contest were allegations of high deputy turnover, with critics citing 40 to 50 departures from the department under Wilke's tenure. Challenger Mease characterized the attrition as a symptom of "good old boy politics" and called for structural reform.
Wilke, defending his record, argued that turnover figures cited by critics were misleading and that the department had maintained effective public safety operations throughout his tenure.
Howell, the Democratic nominee, is expected to campaign on a platform emphasizing professional accountability and community policing. As a working law enforcement officer in Haywood County's county seat, he brings active patrol experience to the race.
