Haywood County Felon Arrested After Traffic Stop Leads to Major Narcotics and Firearms Seizure

Haywood County -- December 20, 2025: A routine traffic stop conducted by the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit escalated into a significant drug and weapons bust this week, resulting in the arrest of a local man.

The investigation began when detectives pulled over a vehicle driven by Phillip Burnette of Canton. During the initial roadside interaction, detectives discovered approximately two grams of methamphetamine and a quantity of marijuana on Burnette’s person.

Following the discovery, Burnette was advised of his Miranda rights. According to investigators, he then admitted to possessing a much larger cache of illegal items—including approximately 40 grams of crystal methamphetamine and several firearms—at his residence.

Search Warrant and Seizure

Given Burnette’s status as a convicted felon, which prohibits the possession of firearms, detectives secured a search warrant for his home. Upon executing the warrant, the Crime Suppression Unit located the items exactly as described during the interview.

The search of the residence yielded a significant haul of contraband:

Methamphetamine: Approximately 44.6 grams of suspected crystal meth.

Marijuana: Multiple bags packaged for sale, totaling approximately 552.4 grams.

Arsenals: Multiple firearms and a variety of ammunition.

Paraphernalia: Various items used for the use and distribution of controlled substances.

Legal Proceedings

Burnette faces multiple charges related to the possession and intended distribution of narcotics, as well as weapons charges stemming from his prior felony convictions.

Editor's Note: A criminal charge is an accusation, by law, a person accused of a crime is innocent until proven in a court of law.
