US 441/Newfound Gap Road is officially reopening today, September 12, by 4 PM — a full 18 days ahead of scheduleeopening today, September 12, by 4 PM — a full 18 days ahead of schedule!
After a major washout on August 1, crews worked quickly to repair the road and restore this vital route through the Smokies. Thanks to the outstanding collaboration between the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration, and local partners, the road has been restored.
“The successful reopening of Newfound Gap Road ahead of schedule is a testament to the strong partnership between the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration, and our local partners,” said Charles Sellars, Acting Superintendent of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. “We’re proud to have restored this critical route so quickly, improving access for our visitors and gateway communities.”
Drive with caution — wildlife has been more active near the roadway due to the lack of traffic over the past month.
The stats:
120 tons of sandbags placed to temporarily divert the stream.
144 truckloads of debris removed.
2,000 tons of gravel delivered.
152 boulders placed to construct a retaining wall and stabilize the slope.
Note: Single-lane closures may be in place near the repaired section on September 15 as final work is completed.
