North Carolina -- May 4, 2026: Governor Josh Stein has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset today, Monday, May 4, 2026.

The order comes in observance of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day, a day dedicated to honoring the men and women of the fire service who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. While the national memorial day was officially Sunday, May 3, North Carolina protocol dictates that flags are lowered the following Monday when the date falls on a weekend.

Honoring the Ultimate Sacrifice

In a statement accompanying the order, Governor Stein emphasized the bravery and selflessness of North Carolina’s first responders.

“Today we remember the North Carolina firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice for others,” said Governor Stein. “May their memories be a blessing, and may we honor their heroic work by celebrating their courage and dedication to keeping their neighbors safe.”

A Tradition of Remembrance

The lowering of flags for this occasion is carried out in accordance with Public Law 107-51, which mandates annual recognition of fallen firefighters. This tribute serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by volunteer and career firefighters across the state every day.

How to Observe

While the mandate specifically applies to state-owned buildings and facilities, Governor Stein encourages all residents, businesses, and local governments to participate in this tribute:

  • Displaying Flags: Individuals and private businesses are invited to join the state in lowering their flags to half-staff for the duration of the day.

  • Moment of Silence: Citizens are encouraged to take a moment today to reflect on the service of local fire departments.
