Lake Lure -- August 8, 2026: LAKE LURE, N.C. — There is more good news coming from Lake Lure as restoration efforts continue across the community. Visitors are once again able to enjoy portions of Buffalo Creek Park, while work is also moving forward on a new Rainbow Bridge and water feature at the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge.
The Town of Lake Lure announced that the Buffalo Creek Park Loop is now open to visitors following extensive trail work and improvements.
The reopening represents another step forward for outdoor recreation in the area and was made possible through the efforts of numerous organizations, volunteers and Town employees who contributed many hours of physical work restoring the trails.
The Town thanked SORBA, Conserving Carolina and its volunteers, Carolina Climbers Coalition and its volunteers, Rutherford Outdoor Coalition and its volunteers, Chris "Shrimper" Khare, and the Town of Lake Lure Public Works Team for their work.
According to the Town, the following areas are now open:
The right fork of the Buffalo Creek Park Trail up to its connection with the Weed Patch Mountain Trail
Weed Patch Mountain Trail from the Buffalo Creek Park Loop to the Gray Rock overlook
Upper Boulders Trail
Buffalo Creek Park Loop
Visitors should be aware that other portions of Weed Patch Mountain Trail remain closed while restoration work continues. The Town said additional updates will be provided as work progresses.
There is also encouraging news from the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, where work has begun on a major feature connected with the new Rainbow Bridge.
Crews have started construction of a custom circulating water feature designed to resemble a flowing creek. The new Rainbow Bridge, being designed by Amy Wald, will eventually cross over the water feature.
The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge organization described the start of construction as "very big news" and thanked Jay's Lawn & Landscape Co. for its work bringing the project closer to reality.
Once construction of the water feature is completed, work can begin on the new Rainbow Bridge itself.
The Rainbow Bridge project is another sign of rebuilding and renewal in a community where residents, volunteers, businesses and organizations have continued working to restore places that make Lake Lure special.
The reopening of recreational trails and progress at the Flowering Bridge may be separate projects, but together they provide something the Lake Lure community has been waiting to see: visible signs of recovery and places returning to life.
There is still work ahead, including restoration of the remaining closed sections of Weed Patch Mountain Trail. But each reopened trail, completed project and returning attraction represents another step toward welcoming residents and visitors back to the outdoor spaces that have long helped define Lake Lure.
And sometimes, after everything a community has been through, a little good news is worth sharing.
