WNC Football News -- Auguset 9, 2026: The lights are coming back on across Western North Carolina. High school football teams throughout the mountains are returning to practice fields, coaches are preparing their players, and communities from Asheville to the far western counties are getting ready for another season of Friday night football.
For players, coaches and families, the weeks leading into a new season bring anticipation, preparation and plenty of hard work. For fans, they mean something much simpler:
Friday night football is almost back.
A Western North Carolina Tradition
High school football occupies a special place in communities across the mountains.
On Friday nights, stadium lights illuminate fields from Buncombe and Henderson counties to Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, Cherokee and communities throughout Western North Carolina.
But the experience extends well beyond the football field.
Marching bands rehearse. Cheerleaders prepare. Students get ready to fill their sections. Parents volunteer. Concession stands come back to life. Coaches put the finishing touches on months of preparation.
And families who have been attending games for generations return to the same hometown stadiums.
In some mountain communities, Friday night football remains one of the few events capable of bringing much of the community together in one place.
Familiar Rivalries Will Return
Another season also means another chapter for some of Western North Carolina's best-known high school football rivalries.
Pisgah and Tuscola will once again represent opposite sides of one of the region's most passionate football traditions.
Across Buncombe County, Asheville, A.C. Reynolds, T.C. Roberson, Erwin, Enka and North Buncombe will provide another season of local competition.
Henderson County will have its own battles involving Hendersonville, West Henderson, North Henderson and East Henderson.
Farther west, programs including Franklin, Smoky Mountain, Swain County, Cherokee, Murphy, Andrews and Robbinsville will again carry football traditions that have been built over generations.
Mountain Heritage, Mitchell, Avery, Madison, McDowell, Brevard, Rosman and other programs across the region will add their own stories to the season.
Some teams will enter the year with championship expectations.
Others will surprise people.
And somewhere in Western North Carolina, a player most fans haven't heard about yet will probably become one of the stories of the season.
That's part of what makes August exciting.
More Than Wins and Losses
WNC Times plans to follow more than final scores this season.
High school athletics are ultimately about students and communities.
There will be seniors playing the final season of a sport they've loved since childhood. There will be freshmen putting on a varsity uniform for the first time.
There will be coaches reaching milestones, players having breakout performances and teams overcoming difficult starts.
There will also be marching bands, cheerleading squads, student sections, volunteers and families who help create the atmosphere surrounding Friday night football.
Those stories matter too.
