Madison County -- June 19. 2026: The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) announces the arrest of former Madison County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy, Bronis Coy Phillips, on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges arising from alleged criminal activity involving inmates and detention facility staff.

Phillips was taken into custody in Maricopa County, Arizona, at 12:10 AM on Sunday, June 14th. He is currently being held without bond, and the extradition process has begun to return him to North Carolina to face these charges.

The SBI is working in coordination with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, and Arizona authorities to ensure a safe and orderly extradition and prosecution process.
