The charges stem from an emergency response in March 2025, when Fletcher Police officers arrived at a local scene regarding an unresponsive individual. Upon arrival, emergency responders located the victim, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

An official autopsy later determined that the victim died from acute toxicity involving a combination of fentanyl and cocaine. Following the autopsy findings, investigators conducted a lengthy inquiry to trace the source of the illicit substances, ultimately leading to Callahan's arrest.
