WNC -- FEMA has officially extended critical housing support for Western North Carolina residents still recovering from Tropical Storm Helene. Originally set to expire on March 29, 2026, the program will now provide a "runway" for displaced families through September 30, 2026.
This extension aims to prevent homelessness while survivors navigate the complex process of rebuilding or finding permanent homes.
Key Details of the Extension
Extended Deadline: The program now runs through September 30, 2026, providing an additional six months of stability.
Direct Temporary Housing: Survivors currently living in FEMA-provided trailers or mobile units can remain in their current homes.
Rental Assistance: Financial support for those renting alternative housing will continue for eligible households.
Current Impact: Over 6,100 households have received roughly $23.6 million in rental assistance to date, with 243 families still utilizing direct housing units.
The "Pay-to-Stay" Transition
Beginning March 29, 2026, FEMA will transition occupants in direct housing to a monthly rent model. The cost is based on the HUD Fair Market Rate and will follow a graduated scale:
April – May 2026: Residents pay 25% of the market rate.
June – July 2026: Residents pay 50% of the market rate.
August – September 2026: Residents pay 75% of the market rate.
October 2026 and beyond: Residents pay 100% of the market rate.
