WNC Outdoors -- October 1, 2026: Cooler mountain air and early traces of autumn color are setting the stage for a busy weekend across Western North Carolina. From open-air heritage gatherings and street celebrations to working orchard trails and athletic matches, outdoor opportunities span the region from the high plateau to the valley towns.
Here are the prime open-air events, farm outings, and outdoor festivals taking place Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4.
Farm City Day at Jackson Park (Hendersonville): Running Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., this long-running Henderson County favorite spreads across the green fields of Jackson Park. The outdoor gathering bridges rural heritage and town life with working antique tractor displays, open-air youth activities, a petting zoo, and local agriculture booths set in the crisp valley air.
Bascom Lamar Lunsford Mountain Music & Madison Heritage Arts Festival (Mars Hill): Taking place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. across the outdoor Upper Quad and surrounding grounds of Mars Hill University, spilling into College Street. The open-air setting features traditional ballad singers, string bands, flatfoot dancers, and mountain craft demonstrations under mature campus trees.
ColorFest! Arts & Crafts along Front Street (Dillsboro): Set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., this Tuckasegee river town turns Front Street into an open-air marketplace. More than 40 regional artists demonstrate pottery, basket weaving, and woodworking on the sidewalks against the backdrop of changing mountain ridges.
50th Annual Fall Festival at John C. Campbell Folk School (Brasstown): Spanning Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. across a 270-acre campus in Cherokee County. One of the region's premier outdoor celebrations of Appalachian craft, featuring more than 200 visiting artisans, live blacksmithing demonstrations, open vendor meadows, and walking grounds.
Brushy Mountain Apple Festival (North Wilkesboro): Filling the open downtown streets on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., this massive street gathering draws hundreds of local orchardists, cider presses, woodcarvers, and Appalachian musicians for an entire day outdoors celebrating the mountain apple harvest.
Asheville Grass Open (Asheville): Matches run Friday through Sunday on the grass grounds at HomeTrust Park and McCormick Field. Spectators can catch fast-paced adult division grass volleyball tournament action under open skies right in the heart of downtown Asheville.
Oktoberfest on the South Slope (Downtown Asheville): Taking over the South Slope district on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The event moves fully outdoors into the streets with open-air staging, traditional Bavarian lawn games, and regional food and beverage setups.
Sapphire Valley Arts & Crafts Festival (Sapphire / Plateau Area): Open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the community grounds of Sapphire Valley Resort. A high-elevation open-air market bringing mountain woodworkers, jewelers, and food stands together along the Plateau.
Eliada Fall Festival & 8-Acre Corn Maze (Asheville): Welcoming visitors Friday through Sunday with hours running Friday 3 to 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The property offers open tractor rides, lawn games, and marked walking paths cutting through eight acres of towering corn.
Working Orchards and U-Pick Trails (Hendersonville): Area orchards are in peak open-air harvest mode all weekend. Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard features pick-your-own apples and pumpkins across a 70-acre hillside, wagon rides, and a five-acre maze. Nearby at Jeter Mountain Farm, open wagon trips take visitors directly onto the orchard hillsides alongside covered outdoor tasting spaces.
Autumn Color and Wildlife at Grandfather Mountain (Linville): Open daily throughout the weekend with early high-country foliage on display. Outdoor activities include guided autumn naturalist walks along rocky ridgelines, viewing raptor migrations from the Mile High Swinging Bridge, and walking the open habitat trails.
