Asheville -- June 29, 2026: Two defendants charged in the Fairview triple homicide are scheduled to appear in Buncombe County court today for arraignment in connection with the deaths of three family members.
Star Grant, 16, who is being prosecuted as an adult, and Devan Loving, 28, face three counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony conspiracy to commit murder.
The charges stem from the deaths of Grant's parents, Travis Eugene Grant, 41, and Kimberly Michelle Grant, 42, along with her grandmother, Sharon Harwood Grant, 66. The three were found dead inside their Ashworth Drive home in Fairview after Buncombe County deputies conducted a welfare check on May 7.
Investigators allege the killings occurred several days before the victims were discovered. Authorities say Grant and Loving fled to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where they were arrested on May 8. Both later waived extradition and were returned to North Carolina to face prosecution.
Earlier this month, a Buncombe County grand jury indicted both defendants on three counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony conspiracy to commit murder. During previous court proceedings, prosecutors alleged the victims suffered both gunshot and stab wounds before the suspects left the state. Those allegations have not been proven in court.
An arraignment is a formal court proceeding during which defendants are advised of the charges against them and are asked to enter a plea. It is not a trial, and no determination of guilt or innocence is made during the hearing.
The case has drawn significant attention across Western North Carolina because of the nature of the crimes and the family relationship between one of the defendants and the victims. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive in the case.
