Cherokee -- April 13, 2026: TThe Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) has been awarded a $4,746,585 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to address urgent housing needs within the community. This investment, announced as part of the 30th anniversary of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA), aims to modernize existing units and pave the way for new housing developments.
Where the Money Goes: A Breakdown of the $4.7M
This grant is a multi-layered investment managed by the Cherokee Indian Housing Division (CIHD). The funding is earmarked for five specific areas of impact:
Housing Development: This covers the "groundbreaking" phase, including the infrastructure needed before construction begins—such as paving driveways and extending water and sewer lines for new family homes in communities like Birdtown and Snowbird.
Operation and Modernization: This keeps current residents safe and comfortable. Funds will be used for major repairs, roof replacements, and energy-efficiency upgrades for roughly 300 existing units, including Tsali Manor Apartments and various Mutual Help homes.
Housing Services for Families: Beyond construction, the grant supports the "human" side of housing. This includes Down Payment Assistance (DPA) and homebuyer education classes to help tribal members secure financing and manage long-term homeownership.
Safety and Crime Prevention: A portion of the funding is dedicated to neighborhood security, which typically includes improved street lighting, security cameras in tribal housing developments, and community safety programs.
Model Activities: This allows the tribe to pursue innovative "pilot" projects, such as tiny home developments for transitional housing or specialized units for elders and citizens with disabilities.
