Asheville -- October 16, 2026: A mid-morning vehicle accident near Asheville’s hospital district claimed the life of a 74-year-old local driver after his SUV flipped near McDowell Street.
Emergency crews were dispatched to Doctors Drive shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, following reports of an overturned vehicle.
Initial findings by Asheville Police Department investigators indicate that Phillip Douglas Penland was heading south along McDowell Street behind the wheel of a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While in transit, Penland apparently experienced an acute medical event that caused him to lose command of the SUV, sending the vehicle off course and flipping it onto Doctors Drive.
First responders transported Penland directly to Mission Hospital, located just steps away from the scene.
Police officially named Penland on Thursday, though official findings remain pending regarding whether his death stemmed directly from the underlying health crisis or trauma from the impact.
