What are Adaptive Ranger-Led Programs?

Adaptive programs are guided experiences led by National Park Service rangers and trained volunteers using specialized adaptive equipment that helps participants enjoy areas of the park that might otherwise be difficult to access.

Programs are designed to be enjoyable, educational, and accessible while showcasing the incredible landscapes, wildlife, and history of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Experiences may include:

• Guided adaptive hikes
• Adaptive biking adventures
• Fly fishing experiences
• Accessible camping opportunities
• Seasonal ranger-led nature programs

Many programs utilize adaptive equipment, including GRIT Freedom Chairs, allowing visitors with mobility challenges to enjoy natural trails with assistance from trained volunteers.

A day in the Smokies for everyone

One of the most meaningful aspects of these programs is that they are designed to bring people together. Family members, friends, caregivers, and loved ones are encouraged to participate, creating opportunities to explore the park side by side.

The National Park Service believes everyone deserves the chance to experience the mountains, fresh air, wildlife, and scenic beauty that make the Smokies America's most visited national park.

Planning your visit

Adaptive programs are offered throughout the year, including many events on the North Carolina side of the park near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center.

Participation is free, but advance registration is required because adaptive equipment and volunteer support are limited.

Everyone belongs outdoors

The Smokies have long been a place where families make memories, children discover nature, and visitors find peace among the mountains. Adaptive Ranger-Led Programs help ensure those experiences are available to more people than ever before.

Whether you're participating yourself, supporting a loved one, or simply learning about the park's commitment to accessibility, these programs are another reminder that our public lands are meant to be enjoyed by everyone.
