Diesel fuel has surged past the historic six-dollar milestone to set an all-time national record, while everyday gasoline prices in the mountains are climbing rapidly toward four dollars a gallon.
According to a Sept. 14 report by GasBuddy, diesel prices jumped on average 31.6 cents per gallon over the past week, reaching an unprecedented national average of $6.183 per gallon. This marks the highest diesel average ever recorded in U.S. history.
While regular unleaded gasoline has not yet broken its all-time high set in the summer of 2022, its rapid escalation over the last seven days is dealing a direct blow to household budgets. Nationally, the average price of gas rose 17.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $4.25 per gallon. That represents a 19-cent jump over the past month and stands $1.14 per gallon higher than this time last year, based on reports from more than 150,000 stations nationwide.
Western North Carolina Feeling the Pinch
Local drivers across the mountains are seeing identical pressure at the pump:
Regular gasoline prices in the Asheville area jumped 15.2 cents per gallon on average over the last week.
The Asheville metropolitan average now stands at $3.98 per gallon across 259 surveyed stations.
Pump prices in Asheville are 29.1 cents per gallon higher than one month ago and $1.18 per gallon higher than this time last year.
Local station pricing reveals a massive gap: on Sept. 13, the cheapest station in Asheville stood at $3.69 per gallon, while the most expensive reached $4.49 per gallon—an 80-cent difference within the exact same market.
Across North Carolina, the statewide spread was even wider, with prices ranging from $3.62 up to $4.95 per gallon, a difference of $1.33.
