The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) confirmed Friday that construction crews have officially advanced into the foundational phase of the multi-billion-dollar project, bringing heavy drilling machinery and cranes into active corridors near Interstate 240 and the Asheville Racquet Club.
Digging Deep: The Latest Progress
According to NCDOT officials, early site-clearing efforts are wrapping up to make room for massive subterranean operations. Workers have spent the last few weeks clearing active project footprints and removing structures that stood within the path of the future highway. Now, the heavy equipment has arrived. Cranes and specialized drill rigs are being deployed to construct the deep foundations—including more than 300 planned drilled shafts—that will ultimately support a network of brand-new bridges and highway ramps. A Multibillion-Dollar Facelift Decades in the Making
The I-26 Connector is designed to resolve one of the region’s most notorious transit bottlenecks. Once complete, the project will build a continuous interstate corridor linking I-26 south of Asheville directly with U.S. 19/23/70 to the north, separating local cross-town traffic from interstate commerce passing over the French Broad River.
