Crews Battle Brush Fire on Shumont Mountain; Smoke Visible in Area

Buncombe/Rutherford County -- January 1, 2026 : Firefighters from across the region are working today to contain a brush fire in the Shumont area of Rutherford County. The blaze, which was first reported around 7:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, is located near 905 Bald Mountain Road.

According to latest reports, the fire has consumed approximately 16 acres. While the acreage is relatively small, the response is complicated by the "extremely rough" and steep terrain of the Shumont Mountain area.

Current Status and Safety

Despite the challenging conditions, emergency officials have shared several positive updates regarding the situation:

Containment: The fire is currently remaining within established fire lines.

Evacuations: No evacuation orders have been issued at this time.

Damage: There have been no reported injuries and no structures have been lost.

Smoke Advisory: Residents in the Shumont area and surrounding communities should expect to see and smell smoke throughout the day as crews continue their operations.

Mutual Aid in Action

The response is a multi-agency effort. Buncombe County is providing critical support to Rutherford County crews, with several agencies still on the scene to ensure the fire does not breach containment lines. The Lake Lure Fire Department has also been active in providing mutual aid as the fire sits near the county line.
