Cherokee County -- September 14, 2026: A motorcycle reported stolen more than two decades ago in Tennessee has been recovered in Cherokee County, North Carolina, leading to an arrest. The case highlights how local vigilance can bring resolution to seemingly cold cases, with the stolen vehicle from 2001 finally being identified and recovered in September 2026.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office became aware of suspicious activity involving a motorcycle on September 2, 2026. Deputies observed a man, later identified as Brian Hogan, spray-painting the motorcycle red outside a dollar store near Highway 129. This unusual behavior prompted an investigation by local authorities.
Upon checking the motorcycle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through law enforcement databases, investigators discovered it had been reported stolen out of Blount County, Tennessee, on May 22, 2001. The Blount County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to confirm the original theft report and provide necessary documentation.
Following the discovery, deputies located Hogan at a residence, he was known to regularly visit in Cherokee County. He was arrested on September 11, 2026, and charged with Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle under North Carolina law. Hogan is currently being held without bond at the Cherokee County Detention Center.
