WNC -- June 29, 2026: On Saturday, residents and visitors across Western North Carolina celebrated an important milestone as Chimney Rock State Park marked one year since reopening following the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene.
For communities throughout Buncombe, Rutherford, Henderson, and surrounding counties, the park's reopening represents far more than the return of a popular destination. It symbolizes the resilience of Western North Carolina and the ongoing recovery of a tourism economy that depends heavily on the region's natural attractions.
Following Hurricane Helene, Chimney Rock State Park was forced to close while crews repaired extensive damage caused by flooding, erosion, and compromised infrastructure. State agencies, local partners, and contractors spent months restoring roads, trails, safety features, and visitor access before the park officially reopened on June 27, 2025.
