Henderson County -- May 26, 2026: Severe storms moving through Henderson County this morning have caused widespread flash flooding, severe road damage, and a massive roadway washout that has completely severed a major travel artery between Gerton and Fairview.
The Gerton Fire Department issued an urgent warning on social media early Tuesday morning, pleading with local residents to stay off the roads entirely while emergency crews assess the damage and respond to multiple concurrent crisis calls.
Massive 12-Foot Deep Hole Closes Charlotte Highway
The most severe damage reported so far is on Charlotte Highway near the Henderson County line, which is now completely closed to all traffic.
Emergency crews originally responded to the area to clear a downed tree. As they were returning from the call, alert firefighters noticed the asphalt beginning to cave away. Upon closer inspection, crews discovered a catastrophic 12-foot deep hole washed out completely underneath the roadway.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) was rushed to the scene. Engineers determined that the damage is so extensive that crews will have to dig up the entire remaining roadway to access and repair the failure.
Because of this washout, travel is completely blocked in both directions:
You cannot travel Charlotte Highway to access the Gerton or Bat Cave areas.
You cannot travel from Gerton to the Fairview area via Charlotte Highway.
Emergency officials state this will be an extended repair and are advising motorists to plan alternate routes for at least the remainder of the day, if not longer.
"Stay In": Widespread Hidden Road Dangers
Gerton fire officials emphasize that the dangers extend far beyond Charlotte Highway. Multiple roads across the region are currently flooded, structurally compromised, or entirely blocked by debris.
First responders delivered a stark warning about hidden structural failures beneath local pavement:
"Many roads may look okay but have nothing under them. Please, for your safety, stay where you are until we can get assessments done and start emergency repairs."
Emergency Services Stretched Thin
With crews handling several emergency calls simultaneously, officials are asking the public to keep phone lines clear for life-threatening situations. NCDOT crews are currently en route to assist local volunteers with formal road closures and barricades.
What residents need to do right now:
Shelter in place: Do not attempt to drive, even if the road immediately outside your home appears safe.
911 Restrictions: Only call 911 if you are experiencing a true, immediate emergency.
Plan for delays: Expect any essential travel through the area to be heavily disrupted for the foreseeable future.
