Catamounts and Mountaineers Surge; Bulldogs Celebrate Homecoming

Western Carolina Men's Basketball seeks to extend their winning streak on the road, while the Women look to rebound from a tough loss. Appalachian State Men's Basketball recovered from a close loss with a big win today.

Western Carolina University (WCU) men's basketball aims to continue its winning streak, while Appalachian State looks to build on a recent recovery. The contrasting trajectories create a narrative of differing fortunes for the two Western North Carolina programs.

Catamounts' Momentum

The Western Carolina Catamounts men's basketball team seeks to extend its three-game winning streak as they head to VMI on February 21. The team's overall record improved to 11-15 (7-8 SoCon) after a recent 91-77 home victory against UNC Greensboro. Prior to that, WCU had wins against The Citadel at home and at Chattanooga, which broke a previous five-game losing streak.

In the February 18 game against UNC Greensboro, redshirt junior Cord Stansberry scored 25 points, and freshman Tahlan Pettway had a career-high 24 points. Four Catamounts scored in double figures. The team is 11-3 when leading at halftime (7-1 in SoCon), 11-0 when outrebounding opponents, 9-2 when scoring 80+ points, and 4-0 when scoring over 90 points.

WCU's road record is 3-12 overall. The February 21 game against VMI is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Cameron Hall in Lexington, VA, and will be broadcast on ESPN+. Last month, WCU defeated VMI 88-58 at home, snapping a five-game skid against them. The series is tied 17-17 in games played at Lexington. The VMI Keydets have improved their win total by double digits compared to the prior season.

Appalachian State's Rebound

Appalachian State men's basketball has reportedly "bounced back" with a win, though specific details about the game were not available. This win suggests a recovery from a previous close loss.

Looking ahead, Western Carolina will play Mercer at home on February 25, followed by a game against Furman. Following the UNCG game, WCU's record stood at 11-15 (7-8 SoCon), while UNCG's was 12-17 (8-7).
