Remote Learning Day: What Buncombe County Families Need to Know for Feb. 2

Buncombe County Schools are shifting to remote learning or optional teacher workdays. This article breaks down the key details for parents, including assignment deadlines, attendance policies, and meal locations.

Buncombe County -- February 1, 2026: Due to lingering travel hazards and freezing conditions following the recent winter storm, Buncombe County Schools will operate on a Remote Learning Day (or Optional Teacher Workday) on Monday, February 2, 2026.

This decision was made to prioritize the safety of students and staff as transportation crews continue to monitor road conditions throughout the district. Below is a quick FAQ to help your family navigate the day.

  • When will assignments be posted? Teachers will have all assignments uploaded to learning management systems (like Canvas or Google Classroom) by 10 a.m.
    * What if we don't have reliable internet? Students who were sent home with paper packets should complete those. Otherwise, check in with your teacher regarding offline options.

  • How is attendance taken? Students are not required to log in at a specific time. They will be counted as present once they complete and submit their assignments.

  • What is the deadline? Families have up to five school days to turn in the work.

Lunch & Nutrition Services

Hot lunch will be available for pickup and can be eaten in the cafeteria from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the following seven locations:

  • AC Reynolds Middle

  • Black Mountain Primary

  • Emma Elementary

  • Estes Elementary

  • Leicester Elementary

  • North Windy Ridge Intermediate

  • Candler Elementary

  • Cost: Meals are free for all students. Parents and guardians are welcome to purchase a meal for $5.25.

    Safety First

This remote day allows the district to meet state instructional requirements without the need for a makeup day later in the year. While students work from home, school staff will telework or use leave as directed by the district.
