Buncombe County -- March 31, 2026: Buncombe County has restored its emergency alert system after a cyberattack exposed vulnerabilities in the previous platform. The county has transitioned to a new system and is encouraging residents to sign up for potentially life-saving notifications about severe weather, road closures, and other critical events.

BC Alerts, Buncombe County’s official emergency notification system, is back online. Text “BCReady” to 67283 to opt in to important Buncombe County updates. You can also subscribe online to get your profile started.
“We are in the midst of wildfire season in Western North Carolina, and it’s so important that we get critical messages to our community in real time,” said Buncombe County Fire Marshal Kevin Tipton. “If there’s one thing I would tell people to do today to prepare, it’s to sign up for BC Alerts.”
While the name remains the same, Buncombe County has enhanced the technology behind BC Alerts by moving to Rave’s Smart911 platform, improving the speed, reliability, and flexibility of how we deliver important information to you. Unfortunately, if you previously signed up for BC Alerts through Code Red, you’ll have to create a new profile in the Smart911 platform, but the process is easy and only takes a few minutes.
BC Alerts are optional text messages, emails, and phone calls. In the event of a major disaster, Buncombe County will utilize “IPAWS,” a reverse-911 type system, to automatically contact individuals within an identified area with critical life-safety information similar to how amber alerts work. These notifications are received, regardless of whether individuals have signed up for BC Alerts. Double-check that you haven’t turned off that function on your phone by going to your phone settings and notifications to enable emergency alerts.
