BUNCOMBE COUNTY -- An estimated $11 million in grants for tourism-related capital projects in Asheville and Buncombe County will be awarded beginning April 1, when the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority (BCTDA) opens its 2026 LIFT Fund cycle. The initiative is designed to boost lodging, meetings, and community benefits, with the goal of supporting the region's tourism-driven economy through strategic investments in projects that increase patronage of lodging and convention facilities while enhancing community vibrancy.
The LIFT Fund seeks to address recovery needs after Hurricane Helene and position Western North Carolina for sustained visitor growth. Registered non-profit organizations and government entities in Buncombe County are eligible to apply. The grants offer opportunities for public-facing community projects that connect directly to residents' livelihoods through job creation and economic stability.
The announcement comes amid other recent economic developments in the region. A-B Tech recently received $1.04 million in grants for ABM Works, a work-based learning program offering internships for high-school students in Asheville, Buncombe, and Madison counties. The program aims to build the future workforce for the healthcare, early childhood education, and advanced manufacturing sectors. In addition, Dogwood Health Trust provided $10.5 million to bolster regional health centers' financial stability post-Helene, ensuring healthcare access for the broader community. The City of Asheville's $3 million HOME-ARP funding (applications March 16–May 15) targets affordable housing for individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness, according to the city, aiding the region's most vulnerable residents.
Buncombe County's economic momentum is further demonstrated by 14 expansions from 2020 to 2025, creating 1,627 jobs at an average wage of $61,520, with more than $1 billion in investments. Venture Asheville has aided 125 startups, resulting in 166 jobs and $45 million in capital. These investments enhance economic health by increasing overnight stays and events, supporting craft beverage venues, restaurants, and outlets like Tanger Asheville.
