Buncombe County -- January 26, 2026: As conditions begin to stabilize across the region, Buncombe County officials have announced a phased return to regular operations. The local state of emergency is scheduled to expire at 6:00 p.m. today, Monday, Jan. 26.
While the immediate threat of the storm has passed, officials continue to urge caution as extreme cold temperatures may cause lingering icy patches on area roadways.
Government Offices and Services
Most Buncombe County Government administrative offices, including public libraries and parks, will resume regular operations on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 12:00 p.m. However, due to high demand following the weather event, the landfill and transfer station will open earlier, resuming regular hours at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
Other service updates include:
Buncombe County Courthouse: Will operate on a regular schedule Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Waste Collection: FCC Environmental is currently operating on a one-day collection delay. Residents should note that some secondary roads may still be impassable due to ice.
Mountain Mobility: Services will operate on a normal schedule Tuesday.
Shelter Transitions
The community shelters at the Reuter Family YMCA and Erwin High School will demobilize as of 4:00 p.m. today.
For those still in need of a warm place to stay, the shelter at Hearts with Hands, located at 850 Warren Wilson Road in Swannanoa, will remain open until Wednesday at noon. Any community members seeking warming or overnight shelter are welcome until the facility closes.
