Blossman Gas to Host Propane Relief Drive in Swannanoa This Saturday

Swannanoa -- December 20, 2025: As winter settles into the Blue Ridge Mountains, a critical resource for local families is being made more accessible. Blossman Gas & Appliance has announced a community propane drive taking place today, Saturday, Dec. 20, at the site of the former Ingles in Swannanoa.

The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is specifically designed to support the hundreds of residents still navigating the long-term recovery from Tropical Storm Helene. Fifteen months after the storm reshaped the Swannanoa Valley, many families remain in temporary housing situations—including campers and RVs—where propane is the primary source for heat and hot meals.

Community Roots and Continued Recovery

Blossman Gas, an Asheville-based company operating under the philosophy of "Local People Servicing Local People," has been a fixture of the recovery effort since the immediate aftermath of the 2024 storm.

“Today, 15 months after the storm, many people in Buncombe County still require assistance with propane for heating and cooking,” said Blossman General Manager David Lipe. “This propane drive aims to connect with those people.”

Recent data from Buncombe County officials highlights the ongoing need, noting at least 225 active temporary use permits for housing, a figure that includes many RV units currently serving as primary residences for displaced locals.

What You Need to Know Before Heading Out

To ensure the safety of all participants and staff, Blossman officials have released specific guidelines for the drive:

Location: The closed Ingles site in Swannanoa (US-70).

Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Cylinders: You must bring your own propane cylinders.

Limits: * Passenger Vehicles: Up to 90 pounds of propane.

Trucks/Open Trailers: One 100-pound cylinder.

Safety: All federal, state, and local safety codes for transportation and filling will be strictly enforced.

The timing of the drive is particularly vital as temperatures are expected to dip toward freezing overnight. With the Swannanoa Valley seeing a surge in winter heating needs, Blossman expects to serve several hundred residents before the event concludes this afternoon.
