WNC Life Style: June 28, 2026: As summer unfolds across Western North Carolina, many students are enjoying vacations, family trips, and long days with friends. But for another group of students, summer is anything but a break.
While football practices and other fall sports often capture headlines, hundreds of students are already preparing for another season of dedication—one filled with music, movement, creativity, and countless hours of practice.
Marching band members are learning new music while marching in the summer heat. Chorus students are preparing their voices for another year of performances. Drama students are looking ahead to auditions, rehearsals, and long evenings spent memorizing lines. Behind the scenes, technical theater students are designing sets, organizing costumes, programming lighting, and preparing sound systems that will help bring stories to life on stage.
These young performers may not always compete under stadium lights, but their commitment is no less remarkable.
Many families know firsthand what these programs require. Summer band camps often begin before the school year starts. Rehearsals continue after school, on weekends, and during holidays. Students willingly give up free time because they love what they do. Parents spend countless hours driving to practices, performances, competitions, and concerts while supporting their children's passion.
These programs teach far more than music, acting, or dance.
Students develop discipline. They learn teamwork, responsibility, confidence, leadership, and perseverance. They discover how every individual contributes to something much larger than themselves. Whether performing before hundreds of people or working quietly behind the curtain, each student plays an important role.
The applause at the end of a performance lasts only a few moments.
The preparation behind that performance often takes months.
As another school year approaches, WNCTimes wants to recognize these students and the educators, directors, volunteers, and families who make these programs possible.
