Hendersonville has launched a new water source, promising greater water security for residents and businesses in Henderson County. The new intake aims to improve water quality, pressure, and overall service.
New Water Source
Hendersonville Water and Sewage officially launched its fourth water source on Feb. 13, 2026. The new intake and pumping station on the French Broad River is expected to enhance drought resilience and water supply capacity for over 80,000 residents and businesses in Hendersonville and Henderson County.
The French Broad River Intake and Pumping Station was commissioned in December 2025. It draws water from the river and pumps it approximately 2 miles to the city's Water Treatment Facility. This supports a filter expansion that boosts the facility's capacity from 12 million gallons per day (mgd) to 15 mgd. The project began with design and permitting in 2016, with construction starting in 2022. Funding came from water utility customers via monthly bills and a low-interest loan from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) State Revolving Fund.
