WNC -- June 29, 2026: As summer temperatures climb across Western North Carolina, there's no better way to cool off than spending the day in the water. Whether you're looking for a family-friendly public pool, a refreshing mountain swimming hole, or an unforgettable waterfall adventure, Haywood County and the surrounding mountains offer plenty of options.
From Maggie Valley to the Great Smoky Mountains, here are some of our favorite places to beat the heat this summer.
Public Pools
Lake Junaluska Outdoor Pool
One of the area's most scenic swimming destinations, the Lake Junaluska outdoor pool overlooks the lake and surrounding mountains. The facility offers lap swimming, family swim times, and plenty of room to relax after a day exploring the area.
Waynesville Recreation Center Indoor Pool
Looking for a swim regardless of the weather? The Haywood County Recreation Center in Waynesville features an indoor aquatic center that's perfect for families, fitness swimmers, and anyone looking to escape the summer heat without worrying about afternoon thunderstorms.
Canton Outdoor Pool
The Canton public pool remains a summertime favorite for local families. With affordable admission and plenty of space for kids to splash and play, it's a great destination for a relaxing afternoon.
Natural Swimming Holes
Nothing says mountain summer quite like cooling off in crystal-clear streams flowing through the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Midnight Hole
Hidden near Waterville at the base of Mouse Creek Falls, Midnight Hole has become one of Western North Carolina's most famous swimming holes. Cold mountain water, deep emerald pools, and dramatic rock formations make it a favorite for adventurous swimmers. Visitors should always exercise caution when jumping from rocks and remember that water levels can change quickly after heavy rain.
Sunburst Swimming Hole
Located in the Bethel community near Canton, Sunburst offers two distinct swimming areas, including a large plunge pool and another featuring a sandy shoreline that's especially popular with families.
Deep Creek
Inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Bryson City, Deep Creek combines swimming, tubing, hiking, and waterfalls into one unforgettable destination. Visitors can enjoy tubing down the creek before hiking to three beautiful waterfalls. Remember that a National Park parking pass is required.
Graveyard Fields
Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Graveyard Fields offers an easy hike leading to the Lower Falls, where visitors can cool off in a refreshing mountain pool. The high elevation also means cooler temperatures than many valley locations.
Looking Glass Falls
Just outside Brevard, Looking Glass Falls is one of North Carolina's most photographed waterfalls and one of the easiest to access. Visitors can enjoy the refreshing mist or carefully wade into the pool below while taking in one of the state's most iconic natural landmarks.
Sliding Rock
Also near Brevard, Sliding Rock has thrilled visitors for generations. The natural 60-foot rock waterslide sends riders into a chilly mountain pool below. Lifeguards are typically on duty during the operating season, and there is a small admission fee.
Swim Smart This Summer
Mountain waters may look inviting, but they can also present hidden dangers. Before heading out, never dive into unfamiliar water, wear water shoes on slippery rocks, keep children within arm's reach, avoid swimming after heavy rainfall when currents can become dangerous, pack plenty of drinking water and sunscreen, and always leave no trace by taking all trash home.
Western North Carolina is home to some of the most beautiful swimming destinations in the Southeast. Whether you prefer a relaxing afternoon by the pool or an adventure beside a mountain waterfall, there's no shortage of places to make lasting summer memories.
