WNC News -- August 24, 2026: Classrooms across Western North Carolina are officially capacity as traditional public school districts across the region opened their doors for the first day of the academic year on Monday, Aug. 24.

With early colleges and modified-calendar programs having started earlier this month, today’s bell marks the complete return of students across all mountain counties.

  • Heavy Commuter & Bus Traffic: Expect higher traffic volumes and longer travel times during morning commutes (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM) and afternoon dismissal (2:00 PM – 4:30 PM).

  • Watch for Pedestrians & Cyclists: Students will be walking to bus stops, crossing intersections, and biking along local neighborhood corridors and rural routes.

  • School Zone Speed Limits: Flashing school zone beacons are fully active; slow down and eliminate distractions like mobile devices.

  • Strict Bus Safety Laws: State law requires drivers to stop for stopped school buses displaying flashing red lights and extended mechanical stop arms on all two-lane roadways and multi-lane roads without a physical median. Passing a stopped school bus is a Class 1 misdemeanor carrying heavy insurance points and fines.
