WNC NEWS -- August 10, 2026: As summer break draws to a close, Western North Carolina school districts are opening their doors for the start of the 2026–2027 academic year. Staggered start schedules across the region mean students will be returning to campuses throughout August.
Wave 1: Starting the Week of August 10
Four regional districts kick off their school years this week, led by the earliest start on Monday, Aug. 10:
Polk County Schools: August 10
Rutherford County Schools: August 11
Henderson County Schools: August 12
Jackson County Schools: August 12
Wave 2: Starting the Week of August 17
Five additional WNC districts begin instruction the following week:
Haywood County Schools: August 17
Madison County Schools: August 17
Mitchell County Schools: August 17
Yancey County Schools: August 17
Avery County Schools: August 19
Wave 3: Starting Monday, August 24
The final group of mountain districts welcomes students back to close out the month:

Community Support & Health Fairs: Local organizations across the region, including groups in Buncombe County and Asheville, are helping families ease back-to-school expenses by hosting health fairs and distributing free school supplies and screenings.
Bus & Roadway Safety: Drivers across all counties are urged to allow extra travel time, slow down in active school zones, and strictly obey stopped school buses displaying flashing red lights along mountain routes.
School Meals & Drop-off Logistics: District transportation portals are active for families to confirm local bus stops and pick-up times, while school nutrition programs prepare to provide breakfast and lunch service starting on day one.
