Asheville -- August 27, 2026: An Asheville Police Department officer-involved shooting early Thursday morning on Nancy Street resulted in the death of a man described by authorities as a break-in suspect armed with a knife. The incident occurred after officers responded to reports of a breaking and entering, according to the APD.
Officers were dispatched at 12:34 a.m. on August 27, 2026, to a residence at 45 Nancy Street following multiple 911 calls reporting a break-in and yelling. Upon arrival, officers observed signs of forced entry and heard a disturbance inside the home. After entering the residence, officers encountered a man armed with a knife.
According to the APD's account, officers issued multiple commands for the man to drop the weapon, but he refused to comply. Officers then opened fire, striking the man. No officers were injured during the incident. Officers on scene provided medical aid until paramedics arrived, and the man was transported to Mission Hospital in Asheville, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigation Underway
In line with department protocol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has been called in to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.
The identity of the deceased man has not been released by authorities as of Thursday morning.
