Asheville -- July 31, 2026: A 62-year-old West Asheville pedestrian, Linda Jean Johnson, died Monday night after being struck by a vehicle on Patton Avenue. The Asheville Police Department (APD) is actively investigating the fatal incident, which occurred around 11:30 p.m. on July 27.
Officers responded to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian in the 900 block of Patton Avenue in west Asheville. Preliminary investigation by APD indicates Johnson was crossing the road from the eastbound side of Patton Avenue when she was hit by a vehicle traveling west. She was transported to Mission Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Police confirmed the driver remained at the scene following the collision. As of the latest reporting, no charges have been announced in connection with the incident. The crash remains under active investigation by APD’s traffic and crash investigators.
Once the investigation is complete, officers will consult with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office regarding any potential charges or legal action. No further investigative findings, such as contributing factors like speed or impairment, have been made public at this stage.
