Asheville's vibrant arts, music, food, and outdoor offerings have earned it the title of third-best city in the South, according to Southern Living. The 2026 ranking underscores the city's unique community spirit and cultural allure.

Southern Living editors evaluated cities based on a reader survey, cultural vibrancy, and lifestyle trends. The ranking is expected to amplify the voices of local businesses, musicians, and chefs who define the region. The announcement also aligns with March weather trends, which historically see the highest monthly wind rates in the area, contributing to the city's active outdoor environment.

The ranking highlights Asheville's resilience and post-pandemic resurgence as a cultural hub, emphasizing diverse perspectives from Appalachian artisans to global food influences that connect residents to daily community life. Asheville trailed only Charleston and Savannah but ranked ahead of other cities in lifestyle appeal. The Greater Asheville area, including Buncombe, Henderson, and Haywood counties, features mountain ridges that frame iconic recreation like hiking and festivals.

Mayor Esther Manheimer said this recognition validates Asheville as a world-class city and, according to the mayor, provides a boost to its recovery from recent economic challenges. Leadership at Explore Asheville noted that the ranking could increase visitor numbers in 2026, building on a tourism economy that, according to Explore Asheville, generated nearly $3 billion in direct spending and supported approximately 29,000 jobs in Buncombe County last year.
