Asheville -- January 20, 2026: Finding a new best friend just got easier in Buncombe County. The Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce recently joined staff and volunteers at the Asheville Humane Society (AHS) for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate a significant milestone: the Adoption Center is now open to the public seven days a week.
As the only open-intake shelter in the county, AHS serves as a critical safety net for thousands of local animals. This expansion of hours is more than just a scheduling change; it is a strategic move to increase adoption rates and ensure that animals spend less time in the shelter and more time in loving homes.
Building a Supportive Community
The "7-Day-a-Week" initiative aligns the Adoption Center’s schedule with the constant flow of animals entering the shelter. By opening their doors on Sundays, AHS provides more opportunities for working families and weekend visitors to meet their future pets.
“Asheville Humane Society is building a supportive community that positively impacts pets and people,” noted the Asheville Chamber during the celebration.
How to Visit
If you’ve been considering adding a furry member to your family, you can now visit the Adoption Center during the following hours:
Monday – Saturday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Sunday: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
The Adoption Center is located at 14 Forever Friend Lane in Asheville. Adoptions are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. For those who aren't quite sure if they are ready, AHS also offers a "Test Drive" program for dogs over six months old, allowing for a 7-day trial period in your home.

If you aren't in a position to adopt but want to support their mission, there are immediate ways to get involved:
Fundraiser: This Thursday, January 22, Ivory Road Wine Bar in Arden is hosting a "Pour for Paws" event from 3 PM to 8 PM, with 15% of sales going to AHS.
Donations: The shelter is currently in high need of wet cat food. Donations can be dropped off directly at the center during their new, extended hours.
