Asheville Fire Department Rescue Driver After Vehicle Went into French Broad River

Asheville -- August 26, 2025: The Asheville Fire Department (AFD) rescued a driver whose car went off an embankment and into the French Broad River on the morning of Tuesday, August 26, 2025. 

Location: The crash occurred off Lyman Street in the River Arts District, sending the vehicle down an embankment and into the water.

  • Time of rescue: Firefighters were dispatched and performed a water rescue in the morning. By 8:50 a.m., the driver was safely extracted from the car.

  • Traffic impact: During the rescue, traffic was impacted and drivers were asked to avoid the area. The road was reopened by 8:51 a.m..

  • Outcome: The driver was transported to Mission Hospital, according to AFD Communications Specialist John Harbin. The driver's condition has not been updated.
