Asheville -- August 17, 2026: Applications are now open for the Asheville Fire Department’s Explorer Post 77, giving young people an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in firefighting and emergency response while working directly with active firefighters.

The mentorship and training program introduces participants to firefighting, ladder operations, rescue response, equipment handling and first aid through regular training sessions designed to provide a foundation for those interested in a future career in the fire service.

Enrollment is limited to 20 participants, and interested applicants are encouraged to apply early.

Explorer Post 77 participants train alongside members of the Asheville Fire Department, learning about the equipment, procedures and teamwork involved in emergency response.

In addition to technical skills, the program focuses on leadership, responsibility, teamwork and public service.

Participants also have opportunities to compete in the annual regional Boy Scouts of America Winterfest, where Asheville youth take part in events including rapid-dress and high-rise deployment drills.

The Asheville Fire Department describes its Explorer Program as serving young people ages 14 to 21. The program focuses on firefighting and rescue response, fire service equipment and proper handling, first aid and emergency response skills, leadership, teamwork, competitions and direct mentorship from firefighters.

The overall goal is to inspire and prepare the next generation of fire service professionals while giving young people a realistic look at careers in firefighting and emergency services.

Applications must be completed and submitted by August 25, 2026.

Completed applications should be emailed to Senior Firefighter William Burnette at wburnette@ashevillenc.gov.

Because the program is limited to 20 participants, families and interested youth are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
