Asheville -- May 14, 2026: The family of Christopher Rorey Hipps, a 40-year-old Asheville man found deceased under the Haywood Road Bridge, has issued a public plea for information as authorities continue to investigate his death. Hipps' identity was confirmed recently, prompting his family to seek community assistance in understanding the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Hipps was discovered around 12:28 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2026, beneath the bridge in Asheville. The Asheville Police Department (APD) responded to the scene, and initial statements from APD Public Information Officer Rick Rice indicated that "The death is likely from a fall." However, authorities have not ruled out foul play as the investigation remains active.
Police said in a press release: "The family of the deceased, who was located under the Haywood Street Bridge, has requested we share his name with media members who inquire, in hopes that someone might have information that can assist the investigation."
The Buncombe County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the official cause of death, with results pending.
