In response to a growing sense of urgency among residents and businesses, the CoC board voted on August 14, 2025, to form a working group dedicated specifically to West Asheville. The group will focus on proactive solutions to issues that have been "raising the flag a little higher," including open drug use, discarded syringes, and littering. This on-the-ground effort includes a new outreach initiative that began on August 18, 2025, where outreach workers are engaging directly with unhoused individuals to build trust and connect them with vital services.
This action comes as the community grapples with the broader challenges of a housing crisis and the aftereffects of Tropical Storm Helene, which contributed to a 50% year-over-year increase in unsheltered homelessness. The CoC, which serves as a collaborative planning body for the entire region, continues its work to streamline efforts and improve the system of care.
To support its mission, the CoC is encouraging members and community partners to participate in several important upcoming events:
CoC Membership Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 28, 2025, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center of Asheville. Member organizations will have a new opportunity to share announcements with the broader group, with each representative limited to a three-minute presentation.
New Member Orientation: For those new to the CoC, a required one-hour virtual orientation will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. Attending this session is a prerequisite for new members to be eligible to vote during full membership meetings.
