Asheville -- Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity (AAHH) has officially announced the opening of its application window for the affordable homeownership program. This initiative offers a vital pathway to stability and long-term wealth building for qualified individuals and families across Buncombe County.
The program is designed for residents who may not qualify for traditional bank mortgages but have the desire and ability to partner with Habitat to secure a safe, permanent home.
Eligibility and the Power of Partnership
To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet three core criteria:
Need for Housing: Currently living in substandard, overcrowded, or unaffordable housing.
Ability to Pay: Demonstrating a steady income that falls within 30% to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) and the ability to repay an affordable, low-interest mortgage.
Willingness to Partner: Each adult in the household must commit to 200 hours of sweat equity, which includes working on construction sites, assisting at the Habitat ReStore, and completing homebuyer education courses.

The 2026 Application Process
Unlike traditional real estate, the Habitat process begins with education. Interested individuals must attend a Homebuyer Information Session before receiving an application.

Thursday, Feb 12: 5:30 PM (In-person at 33 Meadow Road)
Saturday, Feb 21: 10:00 AM (In-person at 33 Meadow Road)
Applications will be accepted through early spring. Staff members are available at the Meadow Road administrative office to assist applicants with documentation and questions throughout the process.
