The Appalachian State University football community is in mourning following the profound sadness announced today by The OFFICIAL Facebook page of App State Football: "We are profoundly saddened by the passing of App State alumnus, football All-American and former head coach Shawn Clark. We extend our deepest sympathy to Shawn’s family and everyone who knew and loved him." Clark passed away on Sunday at the age of 50.
Shawn Clark's connection to Appalachian State was deep and unwavering, spanning decades as both an exceptional player and a respected leader. As a student-athlete from 1994-1998, Clark distinguished himself as a dominant offensive lineman, earning two All-American honors and cementing his place in Mountaineer lore.
After a successful coaching career that saw him make stops at various institutions, Clark returned to his alma mater as head coach in 2020. Over five seasons, he led the Mountaineers with passion and dedication, compiling an impressive 40-24 record and guiding the program to three bowl victories. Under his leadership, App State continued its tradition of excellence, competing fiercely and representing the university with pride.
He was a mentor to young men, instilling in them the values of hard work, perseverance, and teamwork.
Most recently, Clark had taken on a new challenge as the offensive line coach at the University of Central Florida, where he was hospitalized on September 9th after a medical emergency. While initially reported in stable condition, he passed away unexpectedly.
