Buncombe County -- July 17, 2026: Drivers traveling between Hendersonville and Asheville are seeing a major improvement today as all westbound lanes on Interstate 26 have officially reopened, marking another significant milestone in the ongoing I-26 widening project.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced that its contractor was able to open every westbound travel lane earlier than anticipated, including the lanes climbing the steep Parkway Hill section. The reopening restores continuous westbound travel from Hendersonville to Asheville and is expected to improve traffic flow along one of Western North Carolina's busiest transportation corridors.

The I-26 widening project has been one of the region's most closely watched infrastructure improvements. Thousands of commuters, commercial drivers, and visitors travel this stretch of interstate every day, making expanded capacity an important step toward reducing congestion and improving travel times.

While the opening of all westbound lanes represents a major accomplishment, construction activity is expected to continue in portions of the project. Motorists should remain alert for changing traffic patterns, work crews, and temporary speed restrictions as crews complete the remaining work.

Local businesses and residents are also expected to benefit from the improved traffic flow. Easier access between Hendersonville and Asheville supports daily commuting, tourism, and commercial transportation throughout Western North Carolina.

NCDOT officials encourage drivers to continue using caution while traveling through the corridor. Even with all westbound lanes now open, construction equipment and workers may still be present in adjacent areas as the overall project moves toward completion.

For travelers heading toward Asheville, today's reopening marks an important milestone that many drivers have been eagerly awaiting. The fully reopened westbound corridor is expected to provide a smoother, more efficient drive while bringing the region one step closer to completion of the long-term interstate improvement project.

Drive safely, obey posted speed limits, and stay alert as work continues along the I-26 corridor.
