BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC — The Town of Black Mountain gathered on the evening of March 9, 2026, to honor one of its most loyal, four-legged public servants. K-9 Cayman, a staple of the Black Mountain Police Department, officially announced his retirement during a special presentation at the Town Council meeting.
Accompanied by his partner and handler, Sgt. Logan Newhouse, Cayman was the center of attention as Mayor C. Michael Sobol and the Town Council passed a formal resolution celebrating his distinguished career. For those in attendance, Cayman’s excitement was palpable, matching the community's enthusiasm for his years of dedication.
A Distinguished Career
Cayman leaves behind an impressive professional resume that has made a tangible impact on the safety and spirit of Black Mountain. His service highlights include:
Criminal Interdiction: Assisting in the apprehension of numerous drug offenders and actively combating illegal narcotics activity.
Community Aid: Providing critical assistance to citizens in need during field operations.
Public Ambassador: Serving as a beloved face of the Police Department at local schools and community events, bridging the gap between law enforcement and the youth.
A Lifelong Partnership
The bond between a K-9 and their handler is unique, and the Town Council made sure that bond remains unbroken. The resolution officially transferred ownership of Cayman to Sgt. Newhouse, ensuring that the retired hero will spend his golden years in the care of the person he trusts most.
