Transylvania County -- In a sentencing that reverberated through the halls of the Transylvania County Superior Court on Friday, February 27, 2026, Michael Joseph Dean, 47, of Cedar Mountain, was ordered to spend the remainder of his life behind bars.
The sentencing followed a rigorous three-week trial where a jury found Dean guilty of six counts of first-degree statutory sex offense involving a victim under the age of 13. Superior Court Judge Steve Warren presided over the case, delivering a consecutive sentence of 25 to 35 years for each count—totaling an active prison term of 150 to 210 years.

The conviction is the result of an investigation that involved Detective Andrew Patterson of the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office. District Attorney R. Andrew Murray stated that the severity of the sentence reflects the gravity of the crimes, according to his office, and the state's commitment to protecting its most vulnerable citizens.
"While no amount of time in prison can undo the trauma inflicted upon a child, this 'lifetime' sentence sends a clear message about the importance of protecting our community," Murray remarked following the proceedings.
